Driftwood Typeface

Lettering, Typography, experimentation

This project explores the creation of a custom typeface inspired by the coast and the natural beauty of weathered driftwood. Drawing from organic textures, worn edges, and subtle twists found in wood shaped by the ocean, I designed each letterform to feel imperfect yet intentional.

The typeface blends a relaxed, seaside atmosphere with a handcrafted quality, reflecting how nature shapes materials over time. By combining coastal inspiration with experimental form making, this project captures a balance between structure and fluidity. Resulting in a typeface that feels natural, expressive, and rooted in the shore.

Process

This typeface began with hand drawn letterforms inspired by the organic, weathered shapes found along the coast. Sketching allowed me to explore form freely and embrace natural imperfections.

I then digitized the drawings and brought them into a type design program, where I refined each character by adjusting weight, spacing, and consistency to create a cohesive, handcrafted typeface.
